David H. McConnell founded the California Perfume Company in 1896. McConnell had begun selling books door-to-door, at the age of 16. As a book salesman, McConnell did not fare so well. Mr. McConnell, along with a local pharmacist, developed a fragrance which he planned to use as an free introductory gift to give ladies as an incentive to buy his books.

In 1896 Mr McConnell and his wife hired Mrs. P. F. E. Albee, a widow from Winchester, New Hampshire as the first Avon lady, selling the “Little Dot Perfume Set” . The direct-marketing system used by all Avon Representatives still today was developed by Mrs. Albee, it was the first of its kind.

That same year a catalog, without illustrations appeared. By 1897 twelve women employees were selling a line of eighteen fragrances. In 1902, the company was selling a full range of cosmetics. The first full color catalog was issued in 1905. The company became incorporated in 1916.
In 1937, Mr. McConnell passed away and his son, David McConnell, Jr., inherited the California Perfume Company. Mr. McConnell Jr. changed the company name to Avon Products, Inc, in October of 1939.
